Prevention Programs

Welcome Baby: Volunteers provide support to first time parents at Forsyth Hospital, other hospitals in the region and in their homes. Special referrals can be made by calling 725-BABY.

Warmline: (link to Welcome Baby Page) provides 24-hour telephone counseling for parents with questions and concerns related to taking care of their babies. Postpartum services and referrals. Any county; any hour, call 725-BABY.

Postpartum Support Group (link to WB): A supportive environment for new mothers who may be experiencing “baby blues” and/or feeling anxious and irritable about being a new mother. Please call 725-2229 for more information and group times. Forsyth

Family Support Network: (Link to WB) Linking parents of special needs children with each other for support. Home visits, telephone and group support available. [Surry], [Yadkin]

Parents As Teachers: Providing child development, information and support for parents of children from birth to five years of age. Parent educators visit in the home with educational materials. The goal is to support the parents who are their child’s first and best teacher. [Alamance], [Stokes], [Surry].

The Parenting Institute: Institute’s mission is to increase the capacity of communities to deliver parent education programs in North Carolina. The Parenting Institute seeks to help communities across the state: 1) identify quality parenting instructors; 2) promote successful parenting curricula; 3) implement successful parenting workshops; 4) develop solid business and marketing plans for the programs; 5) develop stable funding; and 6) link programs together statewide to share ideas and support (parenting network). The Parenting Institute offers parenting classes and workshops. Classes can also be designed for corporations, day cares, schools, and churches or particular community groups. Adolescent Parenting Program: Support teen moms with babies. The goal of APP is to make teen moms successful. Support is provided to stay in school, how to parent their babies and in making decisions about second pregnancies. [Alamance]

Circle of Parents: Weekly parent led support groups dealing with parent-child issues. [Forsyth] [ Surry]

Parent/Teen Solutions: Forsyth: A weekly program offered periodically throughout the year to improve relations between teens and their parents by opening up the lines of communication. Parent/Teen Solutions work together as a group to enhance participants overall functioning within their home, school or community. Offered for the region for [Forsyth]

Respite Care: Immediate placement of children with collaborating agencies to reduce the potential for abuse. Parents or Agencies can call 24 hours/ 7 days per week. Free. Transportation available. Offered at Forsyth and Stokes SCAN 748-9028. [Forsyth] [Stokes]

Community Education: Training and workshops to educate the public on child abuse. Wide range of subjects, including day care consultation, prevention programs to children, technical presentation on identification and intervention, as well as program development consultation

System of Care (SOC): is a community outreach program designed to promote the infrastructure connecting the public child welfare agency with families and other natural community resources. It assesses the needs and strengths of family centered and community based practice in Alamance County. SOC is a collaboration of The Family Center of Alamance and DSS providing support for families adn connecting them with other community agencies. [Alamance]
